Are you ready for your weld test ?
These weld test plates are production samples welded at the same time as the pressure vessel seam is welded.
The test pieces are cut out and systematically destroyed using some highly imaginative techniques,
We mostly we bend them in all directions to see if we can snap them (Bend test, reverse bend and nick breaks)
Sometimes we hit them with pointed bits of hard metal to see how big a dent we can put in it (hardness test)
We like to pin them down and swing a big hammer at it to see how much it slows the hammer down (Impact test)
Pulling it apart until it breaks is also to be recommended (tensile test)
Another bit will be chopped up , and polished so you could eat your breakfast off it, etched with acid and then looked at with a microscope. (macro test)
All of this is done to check the weld really is up to the job, because it wants to be for a pressure vessel.
These tests are the real ‘proof of the pudding’ of a weld but so much has gone into putting the correct weld down to start with.
It’s hard to believe but I had a count up and got to over 260 International Standard documents (ISO xxxx) relating to welding (listed below because its hard to believe)
